Editorial Bootcamp is proud to present webinars, for convenient online training anywhere. For all webinars, students may attend “live” or else listen to a full MP3 recording and appropriate video clips afterward.

Business of Editorial Freelancing

  • Finding and getting clients
  • Niche editing
  • Setting rates and negotiating

  • Building your business in a slow time
  • Client communication

  • Work tips and good practices
  • Tax tips

Fiction Editing with Alice Osborn

This intensive online workshop series is for editors and writers who are interested in breaking into freelance fiction editing.  Both novelists who are submitting to agents or directly to the marketplace through self-publishing want to present their best work, so you are in demand as a freelance fiction editor! This three-week series will cover the publishing process and will give you confidence with using style guides. We will cover specific fiction editing concerns such as timelines, characters, point of view, revision, and more. Also, students will gain more confidence with copyediting, rewriting, logic, flow, voice, point of view, characterization, setting, and more. On the freelance business end, we’ll also discuss time management, communication, and other smart business practices.

Advanced Fiction Editing with Alice Osborn

This intensive online workshop series builds on basic fiction editing techniques and strategies–how is fiction editing different from other kinds of editing? We’ll also address how to help clients navigate the publishing world so that we can be the go-to editor for novelists in our market. Students will gain more confidence with copyediting, rewriting, logic, flow, voice, point of view, characterization, setting, and more. There is no prerequisite coursework.

  1. Hi, Laura. This sounds perfect for me, except the time. I have a two hour time difference from you and have to pick up my grandson at school. I need to leave my house a little after 2pm, 4pm your time. I want to sign up for the class,as well as the other copyediting class you are going to offer. The price fits my budget and isn’t a problem.

If I can’t view the webinar at the original time scheduled for class, can I view it at a time that’s convenient for me? I can still do the homework and get it back. That isn’t a problem. It’s the time slot for the webinar.

    Thanks,
    Cassie

Hi Cassie! I do plan on recording the webinar and sending it out to students after each session. The recording will have audio, and (presumably) video of everything we do on the screen. In addition, the bulk of the class will be in the first hour, the last 15 minutes are for Q&A, so you would get about half of the instruction (and the interactive activities) if you can attend the first half-hour. I hope that’s helpful!

  3. Hi, Laura. This is exactly what I needed to know. Thanks for taking the time to explain things in detail. I appreciate it.

  4. Shana says:

When will Advanced Copyediting start? What will it cover? Is there an email list that I can get on so I can get a heads-up on what’s coming? Thanks.

  5. laura says:

Hi Shana! I will probably start Advanced Copyediting in November or December. You can subscribe to our blog via RSS and get all the updates. Advanced Copyediting will include detailed instructions on how to edit tables, figures, visual elements (including equations), front matter, back matter, references, and notes.

  6. laura says:

Shana, I’ve just scheduled the Advanced Copyediting webinar! It starts on Monday, November 14. See the blog for more details!

  7. Leah says:

    Hello Laura,

When and where will your next copyediting seminar (web or in person) be held? I am currently shopping seminars and I came across your site. Thanks!

    Leah

  8. laura says:

Hi Leah! We will be offering a live workshop (a full Saturday) in Raleigh, NC, probably in early to mid March 2012. A new round of webinars will probably launch in another month or so–stay tuned for updates!

  9. Angie Morben says:

Hello, Laura! I’m wondering if the Fiction Editing online workshop coming up in March will cover anything related to actually getting out there and finding freelance opportunities in this field (e.g., where to look, who to talk to, etc.). Thanks much!

  10. laura says:

Hi Angie! I believe the advanced fiction webinar will cover only editing topics and not business topics. If it helps at all, the full-day live Bootcamp on March 24, 2012, will definitely cover work and business material, and I plan to develop a work and business webinar to offer by summer.

  11. Judy H. Sullivan says:

Can I purchase the introductory coursework from early 2012, please? I’d prefer to have digested that material before taking the advanced fiction webinar in November 2012. My B.A. in Communications entailed rigorous grammar but not so much editing. Thanks much! jhs

  12. laura says:

Hi Judy! Yes, you may purchase access to the Fundamentals of Editing webinar, or you may elect to take the new section I’ve just scheduled to begin in mid-September. I’ll email you privately about both! Thanks for asking!

  13. Dawn Pearson says:

    Hello,
I am considering taking the Webinar on Fiction Editing with Alice Osborn; however, I will not be able to attend the Webinar live (I live in Seattle). I’d like to confirm that the recorded class each week would be emailed to me. Also, I was wondering if you could send me the details on any homework that would be due on a weekly basis. In addition, please feel free to recommend any self-study course with a similar content.
    Thanks,
    Dawn

  14. laura says:

    Hi Dawn!
The classes are run through GoToMeeting and a full MP3 recording is made of each one. We generally make the MP3 recording available for download at your convenience (the files are too large to send via email) through DropBox. I’ll have Alice get in touch with you about the homework she creates for the Fiction Editing class. We don’t create massive amounts of homework, I promise. I don’t know of any self-study courses to recommend at this time. Thank you for your interest!

  15. Lynn says:

Do you sell access to any of the old webinars?

  16. laura says:

Hi! Yes, I can sell access to the old webinars, which will include full MP3 recordings, relevant video clips, and handouts. The cost is the same as full tuition. Please contact me privately (use the contact page) if you want specific information. Thank you!
